Frankly, I don't know whether A.J. used any forbidden substance or not. The answer to that is still up in the air, and I'll leave that to the experts. A.J. said he took a prescription, and NASCAR's test apparently showed it to be banned.
NASCAR's head has been up its ass on many issues through the years. I'll mention only one.
They never gave any meaningful consideration to the Hans device until they had to do something because of the needless death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. It was a known, having proven itself in Europe for years. All along NASCAR claimed that Formula One crashes, and drivers not losing their lives because of it did not apply to NASCAR.
Any scientist or engineer will tell you such a position is total B.S.
Mike Helton and gang have had their heads up their asses for years. They rule with an iron hand, and when anyone or anything threatens their authority, they'll do everything imaginable to destroy who or whatever challenges them.
Once NASCAR makes a decision, hell will freeze over before they admit they are wrong. They will never admit it If their drug test is proven faulty.
And NASCAR would rather destroy someone than admit they screwed up, and I suspect that is the entirety of the issue surrounding the A.J. issue.
One last note: NASCAR has no clue as to what is happening on the track - well actually in the stands. On any week they are half empty (half full?), and there are reasons. High prices, continuous tinkering with rules, vehicle body design, restrictor plate size (depends on whose engine is being used), constant questions about whether drivers are actually speeding on pit lane, and a zillion other issues, are turning off the crowds.
