No, people hated on him 'cause of what he represented when contrasted with Earnhardt Sr. in the early 90s. Gordon was everything Sr. wasn't (well, except for the 'good' part -- Earnhardt beat him there). Mainly, it was the whole 'eloquent, pretty boy comes to NASCAR' thing that people hated. And, yeah, the fact that he wasn't from the south didn't exactly help
