Crash Video of the Week: Bobby Allison at Talladega
Bobby Allison's barrel roll down the frontstretch at Talladega in 1987 is among the more consequential wrecks in NASCAR history -- because of it, NASCAR mandated that horsepower-sapping restrictor plates be used at Talladega Superspeedway and Daytona International Speedway.
Having only heard and read about the crash over the years, it's interesting to finally see the video -- yes, it's a spectacular wreck and it's truly a wonder that Allison's car didn't end up in the grandstand and/or kill any spectators, but, somehow, given its place in the sport's lore, I expected ... more. At the very least, it certainly didn't take very long.
Regardless, it seems appropriate that this wreck of all wrecks be the first Crash Video of the Week:
