EMORY HEALTHCARE 500 ODDS

Labor Day weekend.
It’s a chance for most to reflect on all the hard work we do through the consumption of red meat and carbonated beverages that rhyme with “Diller Night.”
For this working man, there’s no time to slack, not when we’re 2/3 of the way through the Sprint Cup season. As an homage to said working man, I decided to show you some point totals from 2010 to 2009. Take a look at the numbers, then some thoughts on what they all mean.

The lead pack is thin.

This year’s Chase is kind of like when my old dog Sam went after a toy. Everyone, Sam included, knew he was getting the toy. My dog was an idiot by the way.
Eleven of the twelve Chase spots are all but secured. Clint Bowyer has a 100 point cushion for that final spot. I’m being generous when I say six drivers maybe, kind of, sort of, probably not but I’m in a giving mood are within fighting distance of that last spot, 175 points off the pace.
In 2009, there were nine drivers within 175 points of each other. Those nine drivers were fighting for the final six Chase spots. It was a much deeper pool of contenders
Maybe there is more parity than we thought.
Among Chase contenders, the lead pack features eight drivers within 100 points of each other, an example of consistent consistency.
As for those drivers who will only be chasing the next party or set of NASCAR hotties, in 2009 there were 17 drivers in the Top 35 at least 1,000 points behind Tony Stewart. In 2010, that number is only 13.
Maybe we should all tick off a Logano.

Kevin Harvick may not win the 2010 Sprint Cup. Still, Captain I’m Getting an Awesome New Sponsor is doing something historic. Harvick has 3,521 points through 24 races. This time last year, dude had 2300 points. That’s a 1,221 point increase for those with an abacus or 53% for those with a calculator.
How will this impact my picks for this week? If you’re not chasing, you’re not going to see you name on my pick list, especially down just 105 fake dollars after Kyle Busch swept Bristol. Now some quick picks and odds from the newly redesigned Spread. Enjoy the weekend, and insert random catchphrase here.
