As a kid, I loved Mike Singletary. A linebacker for the Chicago Bears, the Hall of Famer had a stare that made men wet themselves. Singletary also hit harder than Carl Edwards when he sees anything that rhymes with Keselowski.
Singletary currently coaches the San Francisco 49’ers, where he had one of the greatest coaching rants of all time in his very first game on the job. It is that mantra that will dig me out of my winless hole at the Food City 500 this weekend. Why? Paging Mr. Singletary. (Visit the 1:00 mark, although the whole thing is great)
Marcos Ambrose, Greg Biffle and Denny Hamlin have three of the top five highest average finishes at Bristol. None of them have won at Bristol. I wanted to pick all three, but Mr. Singletary made me think otherwise. I want winners. Hence the following picks.
$10 on Kyle Busch at 7/1: Kyle owned this race last year, leading more than 70% of the race. Busch races to win, even if that means hosing his Chase chances to do it. Plus, we need to see another rocking celebration.
$10 on Jimmie Johnson at 10/1: That’s a winner. And Captain Champ has never had odds this high since Daytona. We all know how that went…oh wait. And Jimmie has never won at this track? Uh oh. Still, 10/1 is too good to pass up. Speaking of which
$10 on Jeff Gordon at 10/1: Gordon has won here five times. Plus it gives me an excuse to link to his wife’s mega gallery.
$10 on Kurt Busch at 12/1: At the start of the season, I thought I would never bet a penny on a Dodge car all year. Just seems like a weird vibe being a lone wolf out there. But Busch has won here five times. Plus he won last week. And we all know Miller made a killing on green beer sales this week; so, maybe that equals some dap for the deuce.
$10/1 on Dale Earnhardt Jr at 20/1:. It seems odd to write a column based on the quote “I want winners,” then bet fake money on a guy who hasn’t won in nearly two years. But Mr. Amp has shown flashes of success in 2010. And to quote another great coach ranter, “We can build on this.”
I am down $200 fake after four races. That’s bound to change Sunday because I want winners who play to win the game and give it 110% while taking it one day at a time and letting the chips fall where they may. No need to insert random catchphrase here. Just enjoy the odds and the race.
