In a season where twists and turns have come from every direction, how appropriate right turns will have such a sustained impact on the 2011 Sprint Cup?

The 2011 Sprint Cup schedule takes us to Watkins Glen where several drivers and one columnist need a win, especially after Brad Keselowski’s win set me back a fake 160 dollars for the season. Since it’s not real money, I’ll survive. Some of your favorite driver’s don’t have such rosy optimism about their title hopes, and that’s what will dictate my picks this week.

20 fake dollars on Kurt Busch at 8/1

Kurt won at Infineon. And by winning, I mean he led 76 laps. Every other driver led 34. Busch also finished second at Watkins Glen last year. I’m floored he’s not the favorite, almost as floored as I was when Jimmie Johnson didn’t punch Busch in the face after Pocono last week.

10 fake dollars on Carl Edwards at 15/1

Edwards won the pole at Watkins Glen last year. Over the last five years, Only Tony Stewart, Kurt Busch and Ambrose have better average finishing positions. For leading the points, Edwards needs a win.  Plus, he’s running the Nationwide race that Saturday, which I think pays dividends.

20 fake dollars on Tony Stewart at 7/1

Whopper Man needs a win, especially with Brad Keselowski, David Ragan and Paul Menard there to ruffle up the Chase. This is the time of year when Stewart heats up…right?

Too bad this column is due before qualifying. The pole winner has won nearly half the starts at Watkins Glen. You might want to alter your viewing habits accordingly. Here’s what The Spread thinks, prequalifying, and insert random catchphrase here.
