Loud Silly Season Rumble Includes Defending Champion

Martin Truex Jr. to Joe Gibbs Racing? That’s the latest and perhaps the biggest silly season rumble. The 2017 NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series champion and a top contender this year once again finds himself with an organization that may close up shop.

What???? Unbeknownst to some of us, Furniture Row Racing- the current employer for Truex- was in talks with GMS concerning a sale. What we’re learning from Sports Business Daily and Racin Boys is that the two organizations met on Furniture Row’s home turf in Denver. The latest report seen on Jayski those talks have broken down, and a deal is unlikely.

Mixed into the story line is the loss of sponsorship money courtesy of 5 Hour Energy. In the GMS discussion was the possibility of sponsorship support from Allegiant Airlines.

Adding fuel to the speculative fire is word that if all else fails, Truex would take over in the 19 over at Joe Gibbs Racing. FRR has been technically aligned with JGR and it would seem to be a seamless move. And what of Daniel Suarez? The report has it that the Monterrey, Mexico native would slide into the 95 at Leavine Family Racing. It wouldn’t be a seismic move; Suarez has been neither spectacular nor terrible.

It reminds us of how the business (read that “sponsorhip”) component can often be cruel. Who would think that a defending champion would have to look at changing teams? While one can speculate that aging FRR owner Barney Visser is looking to slow down, it would appear that the linchpin is the move of 5 Hour Energy. It’s too bad, and yet it’s a movie we’ve all seen before.

Talk about a silly season rumble: Martin Truex Jr. teaming up with Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Erik Jones? That’s an interesting mix. As it is, the link between Furniture Row and Joe Gibbs is unmistakable, and regardless of personalities, would seem to be an easy fit.
