The Jeremy Mayfield saga has taken another sad turn, with the latest revelations exposing a toxic relationship between Mayfield and his estranged stepmother Lisa. In an affidavit submitted to federal court by NASCAR, Mayfield's stepmother claims that Mayfield has been taking methamphetamine since 1998 and that she has witnessed him doing so. The stepmother said in the affidavit:

"Between 1998-2005, I am personally aware that Jeremy used methamphetamine often. I was concerned about his heavy use and talked to his father about it. I saw Jeremy use methamphetamine by snorting it up his nose at least 30 times during the seven years I was around him. Jeremy used methamphetamine not only in my presence, but also when we were both in the presence of others.

Mayfield's response to the Associated Press: "Now they got this lying (expletive) to tell lies about me, someone I am embarrassed even uses the Mayfield name. She's tried everything she can do to get money out of me, I won't help her, so I guess she found a way to get money from NASCAR by giving them an affidavit full of lies.''

Mayfield went further in his comments to ESPN's David Newton.

"She's basically a whore," he told Newton. "She shot and killed my dad."

According to ESPN, Mayfield's father, Terry, died in 2007 of what the Chapel Hill, N.C., medical examiner called a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Police found no criminal activity. Mayfield said his stepmother will be served with a wrongful death suit today.

Lisa told authorities that Jeremy was partly to blame for his father's death. The sheriff's report noted that Lisa Mayfield said Terry Mayfield was "very depressed about not talking with his son, Jeremy, that this was only a matter of time."

This story is no longer a case of NASCAR Said/Jeremy Said. It has boiled into a family drama, and an ugly one at that.

In his comments to Newton, Mayfield ensured he will never be allowed on a NASCAR track again, saying, "Brian France talking about effective drug programs is like having Al Capone talking about effective law enforcement."

Is he saying Brian France uses drugs? That is certainly one way to read it.
