Bobby Labonte is the only driver to have won both titles on what is now known as the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series.
Labonte won the Sprint Cup in 2000 for Joe Gibbs Racing. Labonte visited Victory Lane 21 times in his 20 years on tour. Labonte also has 200 finishes of tenth or better, including a fourth place finish at the 2011 Daytona 500.
It was a critical finish for a driver in transition. Labonte hasn’t won since 2003. He finished 31st in points in 2010; that’s his worst finish ever.
Labonte had his greatest success with Joe Gibbs Racing, where he spent ten seasons. Labonte asked for his release in 2005 and went to race in the famous #43 for Richard Petty Motorsports. After an uneventful two-year run, Labonte bounced around with Hall of Fame Motorsports. Robby Gordon Motorsports, TRG Motorsports and Phoenix Racing.
2011 should offer some more stability. Labonte replaced Marcos Ambrose as the full-time driver of the #47 JTG Daugherty Racing Toyota Camry. JTG partners with Michael Waltrip Racing and should have enough sponsorship to get through the entire season.
