NASCAR fans have never been so excited for the end of summer.
Odds are out for the Bojangles Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, and some of the biggest names in the sport might have reason to pause at the track too tough to tame.
Kevin Harvick remains the favorite at 4/1, with the hope 10 second place finishes will turn into a victory at Darlington. Harvick has one win and four top 5’s in 18 career Darlington starts. That’s 17th among active drivers.
Lurking behind Harvick is Kyle Busch at 5/1. In 60% of Busch’s career starts, he found himself in the top 10, but Busch only has one career dance the Lady In Black at Victory Lane; he could easily be back for an encore this weekend.
Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth are at 7/1. Neither can write home about their Darlington track record. Kenseth has a win, but he also finished outside the top 10 in more than half his Darlington starts. Logano only has two top 10’s in six career starts. There are 25 other drivers with a better average finish.
So who are the likely contenders? Denny Hamlin has the highest average finish among active drivers at Darlington and finds himself at 8/1. Jeff Gordon has seven career wins at Darlington and is 20/1. Jimmie Johnson has three career wins and is 10/1. In spite of past challenges in 2015, all three names are worthy of consideration this weekend.
The Names To Consider:
Kyle Larson and Austin Dillon have both had tough sophomore seasons this 2015 Sprint Cup season. Both did well in last year’s Southern 500. In 2015, Larson is 20/1 and Dillon is 75/1.
Then there are the names of drivers that could use a win to ensure Chase chances. Ryan Newman is 60/1; Clint Bowyer is 75/1; Kasey Kahne is 30/1. Of the group, Newman is the best bet. While he never won at Darlington, he has seven top 5 finishes in just 16 career starts. Newman could be due and is used to picking up speed as the Chase approaches.
