NASCAR Odds: Cheeze-It 355

Oh the joys of road racing.

Watkins Glen is a challenge for every team in the field. The unpredictable nature of the Cheeze-It 355 at Watkins Glen impacts drivers, teams and oddsmakers on multiple fronts.

The Favorite:

Of course, it’s AJ Allmendinger at 6/1.  Allmendinger has a road course pedigree and won here last year. He also has finished outside the top 10 at Watkins Glen just twice in his Sprint Cup career. An Allmendinger win is a great story, but it also wrecks a Chase chance for names like Kahne and Bowyer.

Kyle and Kurt Busch are also 6/1. It’s about time Kyle was a favorite after his run over the last four weeks. Kyle also has two wins at the Glen. Still, both are capable of winning Sunday.

The Contenders:

Brad Keselowski and Kevin Harvick are both 8/1. Keselowski has the higher average finish; Harvick has the win. Both could use a win to boost Chase momentum, even thought a road race isn’t on the Chase schedule (still a pet peeve of mine.)

The next contenders in line are Joey Logano and Carl Edwards at 10/1 and 12/1. Edwards has the fourth best average finish among active drivers at Watkins Glen but has never won. Thirteen drivers have a better average career finish at the Glen than Logano; you can sense who I like more.

The Names To Consider:

It’s a weird race for odds, with familiar names in strange places.

  • Jimmie Johnson has never won at the Glen and is 15/1. When do you get that driver at that number?
  • Jeff Gordon has four career wins at the Glen and is 15/1 as well. Gordon has to win at some point in his final season….
  • Tony Stewart could wreck the Chase with a win and is also 15/1. He hasn’t been at this number in months.
  • Kyle Larson finished fourth here last year and is 50/1.

It’s also important to note that the odds are much lower for long shots. Names like Allgaier and Mears are normally 200/1 or higher. You can’t get anyone above 100/1 this week.

Watkins Glen is an outlier. We’ll see if this Sprint Cup oddity impacts the Chase with another surprise winner. Here’s how your favorite driver stacks up in the NASCAR odds for Sunday’s Cheeze-It 355 at Watkins Glen. Enjoy road racing, and insert a random catchphrase here.
