Chicagoland is a 1.5-mile track that’s actually not in Chicago (Joliet for those precise at home.)
Of all the tracks on tour, Chicagoland has the least amount of information to rely on for hardcore fans. Chicago hosts only one race per year, and the track will be hosting just its 11th race Sunday afternoon.
The big difference is this is now a Chase race. Granted, drivers hate to lose on any track. But since the track hosts just one race that wasn’t on the Chase schedule, teams didn’t kill themselves with extra overtime on setup. That will change Sunday, which could mean some surprises in qualifying and race day.
To the track’s credit, there is plenty of room to pass. That doesn’t mean you’ll get tons of lead changes necessarily, but it does make for an active watch, especially in and around Turn 2. That turn looks bigger than it is.
Now some random facts to impress your friends with Sunday, as ESPN provides broadcast coverage.
- The banking is 18 degrees in the turns, 11 degrees in the tri-oval and 5 degrees on the backstretch.
- The frontstretch is just 2,400 feet long.
- The backstretch is just 1,700 feet.
- This is why there is so much action around the corners.
- The track seats 75,000 fans. Yes, tickets are still available.
- David Reutimann won this race last year.
- Jeff Gordon has the highest average finish of any active driver at Chicagoland Speedway. Stunner.
- Brian Vickers, Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart and Clint Bowyer have the second through fifth best average finish near the Windy City.
- Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick are the only two drivers who have won here twice.
- Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kyle Busch have each won once at this track.
- They will allow you to bring pagers to the track.
