Monday Morning Link Dump

A quick survey of some of the more interesting stories about the sport this morning ...  No, Sunday's Auto Club 500 didn't produce a finish as exciting as the one engineered by Richard Petty and David Pearson at Daytona in 1976 (above); in fact, Sunday's finish rather sucked. But, the race did give rise to some interesting stories. Here's a quick roundup of some of them this morning:* The dearly-departed and apparently-resurrected Daly Planet affirms our sense of what we witnessed on TV ...

Race #2: The Auto Club 500

Matt Kenseth holds off Jeff Gordon to win the Auto Club 500, his second straight win to start the 2009 season. He is the first driver since Gordon in 1997 to win the first two races of the season.   Kyle Busch couldn't pull off the historic triple, but he did finish third in Sunday's Auto Club 500 in California, trailing Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon. Green FlagThe faint glimmer of hope to be found in Johnson's struggles at Daytona (where the No. 48 finished 31st) died a quick d ...

On Second Thought, Danica Patrick Would Look Good in the Cup Garage

In an earlier incarnation of this site, I took another writer to task for suggesting that NASCAR needs to convince Danica Patrick to come join the Sprint Cup Series fray. Well, it's clear to me that I didn't think this matter through clearly enough. Not at all. And I'm enough of a man to admit when I'm wrong and, it just so happens that I think I might have been a little hasty in reaching a conclusion on this important matter. Much, much too hasty. Too hasty indeed.Having o ...

And You Thought Junior Had a Bad Day …

FOX withstands some serious criticism for its coverage of the Daytona 500.  Having spent Sunday's Daytona 500 alternating between the MRN broadcast and listening to driver communications, I only occasionally turned my attention to the big screen TV to my left at ESPNZone in New York City.Judging from the fallout that has continued through the week, I'm apparently glad I wasn't limited to watching the race strictly through the eyes of Mike, Larry, Darryl. And though the overly-caffei ...

Brian Vickers Fires Another Shot

You've got to hand it to Brian Vickers. Not only does he block the crap out of Dale Earnhardt Jr. last Sunday -- too aggressively, I thought; and still think -- and ignite The Big One, but he comes out of the Infield Care Center and calls out Junior. Flat-out ballsy. Vickers' willingness to suggest the emperor has no clothes is a bit like suggesting back in 2003 that Saddam Hussein didn't have weapons of mass destruction, wasn't linked to September 11th, and posed zero ...

Let The Fun Begin: How Many Show Up in California?

Given the endless drumbeat of bad news coming out of NASCAR the last six-or-so months, it was something of a relief to see full grandstands at Daytona last weekend. Whether that crowd was the result of lowered ticket prices or the fact that this was the Daytona 500 -- the crown jewel damn well better sell out -- is almost beside the point. It was a welcome change. However, the brief honeymoon is over, and the sport dives headlong into the teeth of the potential storm this weeken ...

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Lays Off 5,000

Could the slumping world economy force even Goodyear to reconsider its commitment to NASCAR? Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been closely associated with NASCAR for more than 50 years. In February 2007, NASCAR and the Akron, Ohio-based company announced that Goodyear would continue as the sport's exclusive tire supplier at least through 2012 -- insert your own Tony Stewart joke here. It's arguably unreasonable to think Goodyear should curtail its association with NASCAR in light of the ...

The Pettys Might Want to Consider An Intervention

Having done my fair share of therapy in a vain attempt to work through anger and family-of-origin issues -- it didn't work -- I'm hesitant to weigh in on another family's squabbles or engage in armchair psychology. Look, I said I was hesitant ... I didn't say I wouldn't do it. Did you happen to see the answer Richard Petty gave to a question during a Dodge teleconference? The King's response to son Kyle's recent comments blasting what had ...
