All star names that were synonymous with the NASCAR Sportsman Series.

Kyle Busch. Kevin Harvick. Carl Edwards. Clint Bowyer. Joey Logano.

All star names that have found plenty of success and have dominated the headlines and Victory Lanes in recent Nationwide Series seasons. But none are synonymous with the Nationwide Series.

Therein lies the problem I have with the second-tier tour, a lack of its own identity.

ZERO NASCAR DEATHS SINCE 2001

RACING FOR THE LOVE OF THE SPORT

While this weekend may have been an off week for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, there was no shortage of racing. Kyle Busch took home his fourth win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Chicagoland Speedway, Boris Said finally got to victory lane on the NASCAR Nationwide circuit in Montreal and local business owner Gary Puckett was among those that went to Victory Lane at the Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, N.C.

Covering the NASCAR circuit while working a full time job can be an interesting life at times, and every once in a while I get to remember why I enjoy being a part of the sport by sitting amongst the fans at a race.

Earlier this year at Talladega I weathered the storm amongst the fans and emerged with a new respect for the sport. I’ve sat amongst the fans at Pocono, Martinsville, Dover and Charlotte, and for years, paid my way to sit in the stands to simply cover the race from the outside looking in.

This is how I became a fan of the sport and no matter what type of cars or who is steering the wheel behind them, as long as they can run fast and battle one another for the trophy I’m sure of a good show. Knowing that, I took my family and neighbors out to the Carolina Speedway on my weekend away from the track.

DRIVERS FIND CROSSOVER SUCCESS ON THE POP CHARTS

Move over Marty Robbins, there's a new crew of guitar heros and singing sensations in NASCAR town. NASCAR's young guns roll from the racetrack to the recording studio to lay down funky tracks, country songs and even some four-part barbershop harmonies. While most NASCAR drivers' musical efforts can only be described as train wrecks, a new group is tearing up the charts.

As the Chase heats up, so will the Billboard 100 as these albums hit the charts this fall.

Brad Keselowski - Love Songs

NASCAR's "bad boy" has a soft, sensitive side. On his debut release, Brad waxes poetic on love, life and the Sprint Cup. From the ballad "I Want to Drive my Car into Your Heart" to the sexy RnB grooves of "Firing On All of Your Cylinders," Keselowski romances the microphone. With catchy riffs and creative rhymes, the only drawback to his freshman effort are the copious name drops of sponsor Roger Penskie.

NIGHT RACING VERSUS DAY RACING

Bristol’s night race, Texas’s 2011 springtime event, Charlotte’s Chase race. All promote themselves as a big deal because they are held at night. But are they?

The night race tag was special when Bristol Motor Speedway and the Nashville Fairgrounds were the only events on the NASCAR Cup schedule with Saturday evening bookings. Over the years technology has increased to where television broadcasts and superspeedways brought in a much higher grade of illumination. Now night racing is possible at 12 out of the 22 raceways on the schedule.

Bristol still holds an aura of a special race. The track lends itself to being a fan destination whatever time of day the green flag waves. Other races have gravitated towards extra billing for being under the lights.

It's time to lay off Brad Keselowski. For all the grief he has given other drivers, the paybacks now outweigh the original crimes. Congrats Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch, you have now made one of the Sprint Cup's most annoying personalities a sympathetic figure.
