RYAN NEWMAN TALLADEGA CRASH

Posted 11/01/09 at 1:33 PM PST by Joe Donatelli | Email This |

Ryan Newman was involved in an ugly crash with five laps to go at the AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. After contact with teammate Tony Stewart, Newman's car went airborne, flipped and landed on the hood of Kevin Harvick's car. Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet spun several times before settling on its roof. The driver had to be cut out of the car. He emerged dazed, but otherwise uninjured. Video below.

Last spring at Talladega, Carl Edwards' car went airborne and landed on the roof of Newman's car. Newman, an engineer, has been critical of NASCAR's inability to keep its cars from leaving earth.

this was no doubt a scary and of course NASCAR will reduce spped not realizing that that isn't the problem. The thing that caused Newman to get airbourne was that rear wing mainly. Soon Talladega will become a mile 1/2 race on a 2.66 mile race track. NASCAR is get too redunculous with all there changes with restrictor plates and their rulez, I say let the drivers bump draft in the corner. I didn't see anyone wreck in the spring from it. LET THE DRIVERS HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!

"Newman, an engineer, has been critical of NASCAR's inability to keep its cars from leaving earth."

i don't see the big deal, they all come back eventually.

No, genius, it was a reply to the previous comment about all cars coming back to earth eventually. It was a joke, based on the fact that whenever announcers talk about Newman they go out of their way to bring up the fact that he has a degree from Purdon't.

By the way, it's pretty impressive that you were able to infer that I'm an uneducated redneck from two sentences on a NASCAR message board! Hate to tell you, not only am I sure that I've read more than my fare share of books on my way to a CS degree, but I have all my teeth, wisdom teeth included. Nice try, though!

Faust you're a moron -- it takes a "fancy" engineering degree to design cars too. God forbid he has an education -- he should be a toothless uneducated redneck like you, right??

Good point.. You think they would have covered this in the first day of Physics 101 when he was getting his fancy engineering degree!

The car came to rest on its rough? or on its roof?

"We were hoping this would not happen..."

Liars, the sport DEPENDS on these crashes...

I suppose that's 'cause you get bored driving round and around for all that time... Did you know cars can turn right too?

As much as I had to gripe about in the other story about fixing NASCAR, this is the one thing I can applaud them on... There have been some pretty nasty wrecks this year (Edwards, Logano, Newman) and everyone has walked away (or jogged in Carl's case) with no significant injuries. One of the main goals of the CoT was improving driver safety and it's definitely doing that!
