SOUTHERN 500 ODDS

And you thought Talladega was unpredictable?

Darlington is one of my favorite tracks. The track deserves two races. And when you look at all the factors in play Saturday night, this might be the most must see race not named Daytona. Here’s why:

Five different drivers have won the last five races at Darlington. The people who should contend may not contend. Guys who have struggled have a chance to rebound.

Danica Patrick is back. Trouble finds Danica Patrick. I don’t know if it’s her fault or not. I just know  that if I could bet whether she finishes the race, I would wager all my fake profit on her not being there at the end.

Drivers are getting fussy. Talladega rubbed many the wrong way. Several drivers are nearing a point of no return for the Chase. Silly Season is starting to move forward. Add Saturday night and this track to that mix, it’s not a matter of if there is action, it’s how much.

After three straight losses, I still have a fake 355 dollars to my name, enough to throw out these picks for the sake of entertainment and entertainment alone.

13 fake dollars on Carl Edwards at 8/1
Edwards had the best car last year, is getting his mojo back and hasn’t won here. Best of the 8/1 drivers.

11 fake dollars on Denny Hamlin at 10/1

Hamlin has the best average finish among active drivers not named Jeff Gordon; therefore, he also has an ounce of luck.

10 fake dollars on Brad Keselowski at 12/1
Best average finish among active drivers over the last five years who doesn’t have a win at Darlington. This kid is a title contender.

5 fake dollars on Martin Truex Jr. at 25/1
He has to win a race at some point.

5 fake dollars on Ryan Newman at 30/1

This is one of Newman’s best tracks. One more win, and he makes the Chase. Seems like a good upset possibility.

2 fake dollars on AJ Allmendinger at 60/1

I have leftover money.

2 fake dollars on Joey Logano at 75/1

Because I like Toyota cars this year.

1 fake dollar on Aric Almirola at 200/1

I believe in Mike Ford.

1 fake dollar on Reagn Smith at 200/1

Who won this race last year?

There you have it. Nine drivers and fifty fake dollars later, I don’t have any better idea of what will happen Saturday night. Here’s what The Spread thinks. Now enjoy the race, and insert random catchphrase here.
