HAMLIN WINS CRAZY DAY IN TEXAS

Entering the day with the top three in the Chase standings separated by only 38 points, Sunday’s 500-mile race at the Texas Motor Speedway was crazier than anyone could imagine. Throughout the entire Chase, Denny Hamlin’s game plan was to be patient and conservative until making it through Talladega, then let loose. One race after closing the championship gap with Jimmie Johnson, Hamlin stayed true to his word, scoring the win in Texas and taking the points lead with only two race ...

WHO SAID IT WAS OVER?

MARTINSVILLE, Va._ After scoring his seventh victory of the season and first of the Chase, Denny Hamlin walked into the Martinsville Speedway media center pointing at reporters, asking, “Who said it was over? Told you it wasn’t over.”Coming into the weekend 41 points behind Jimmie Johnson in the Chase, Hamlin knew this weekend’s race in Martinsville was his best chance to close the gap before heading to the ‘wild card’ race at Talladega Superspeedway. WHO IS TO BLAME FOR NASCAR’S DECLINE?

CONCORD, N.C. _ These days it seems everyone in NASCAR is trying to figure out the reasoning for a decline in attendance and major drop television ratings. Empty seats and poor ratings have dominated the conversation as of late, instead of one of the most competitive Chases. Most agree the economy has played a major role, some blame the Chase for the Sprint Cup, many argue it is ESPN and others point to the dominance of Jimmie Johnson.  In the last week alone, television ratings dropped 30% ...

CHASE CLINCH SCENARIOS – ATLANTA

HAMPTON, Ga._ With only two races left before the 12-driver field is set for the 2010 Chase for the Sprint Cup, only two drivers enter this weekend’s race locked in the Chase. Points leader Kevin Harvick and second-place Jeff Gordon have already secured a spot in NASCAR’s version of the post-season, but this weekend the remaining 10 drivers in the top-12 have a chance to leave Atlanta with a place in the Chase. While each of the 10 have a mathematical shot to head to Richmond locked ...

BURTON AND BUSCH READY TO MOVE ON

LONG POND, Pa. _ Last weekend’s pit road confrontation between Kyle Busch and Jeff Burton raised many eyebrows in the NASCAR garage, not because of Busch’s actions, but because of Burton’s aggressiveness in confronting the driver of the No. 18. Typically a mild-mannered guy, Burton was on fire following the Coca-Cola 600, pointing his finger at Busch and yelling at him as wife Kim tried her best to pull him away. “He’s real aggressive, and that’s cool,” ...

NEW KYLE RETURNS, REPLACES OLD KYLE WHO THREATENED TO MURDER TEAMMATE

Remember the New Kyle Busch? He was the guy who had supposedly grown past his childlike antics to become a viable championship contender? Then a few weeks ago he was replaced by the Old Kyle Busch who threatened to murder his teammate Denny Hamlin? Well, turns out the New Kyle Busch is back, emerging from the Coca-Cola 600 content not to wish death upon fellow driver Jeff Burton. All hail the return of the Old New Kyle Busch. 5 things we learned from Coca-Cola 600 (SI.com)  ...

PENSKE, GANASSI BATTLE FROM INDY TO CHARLOTTE AS BUSCH WINS COCA-COLA 600

CONCORD, N.C. _ The day started off with a battle between Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi in the Indianapolis 500 and at the end of the night at the Charlotte Motor Speedway it came down to a battle of Penske versus Ganassi to settle the 51st running of the Coca-Cola 600. Dario Franchitti may have been able to get the job done for Ganassi in Indy, but Kurt Busch was not going to let his Penske car be beaten by a Ganassi owned ride. For much of the race Busch was the car to beat, leading 12 times f ...

AUTISM SPEAKS 400 ODDS

I have finally figured out a way to make NASCAR more competitive. When I pick Jimmie Johnson to win, he loses. When I pick Jimmie Johnson to lose, he wins. Sure I can credit the tight points race to one really major JJ funk since the new rear spoiler, three Denny Hamlin wins or a gaggle of green and white finishes. But I'm a narcissist who believes in ramdon karma. So you're welcome for the open points race with multiple contenders. I’m pumped for Dover. Two picks. Two wins in a row. I& ...

HAMLIN FIGHTS PAIN, BEATS COMPETITION

After a complete washout in Texas over the weekend, the Samsung Mobile 500 finally got underway Monday afternoon. The 500-mile event around the Texas Motor Speedway saw teams take the green flag with very little practice, a green race track and many unknowns surrounding the new rear spoiler. Another unknown on the minds of many in the garage was how long Denny Hamlin would stay in the car. Weeks removed from surgery on the ACL in his left knee, Hamlin admitted to still being in pain, but the Joe ...

KIM BURTON PHOTOS

Kim Burton, wife of NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Jeff, gets the gallery treatment this week. I think it's fair to say that many fans - myself included - pull for Jeff Burton at the end of races, just to see how his wife will react. Kim gets a little emotional sometimes. And we have no problem with that. Always nice to see someone getting fired up out there.    Related links:Jordan Fish photosKatie Kenseth picsIngrid Vandebosch mega-galleryDeLana Harvick photosMiss Sprint Cup ...
