‘SHUT UP & DRIVE” HE SAID!

Want to be famous? Get into the NASCAR Sprint Cup series and cross Danica Patrick. How many of you actually knew David Gilliland was still racing before Sunday? I figured as much. Usually the journeyman driver is good for a top ten or two every year, and that’s not that bad considering what Gilliland is working with as a driver for the modestly-funded Front Row team. Aside from that, you would have to be a pretty serious fan to remember his career launching win in the Nationwide Seri ...

FUEL MILEAGE IS STRATEGY AND STRATEGY IS A PART OF RACING

The race isn’t always to the swift. Sometimes, the dominant team doesn’t always win. Just ask the Miami Heat after Game 2 of the NBA finals. In this instance, the team with the hot hand won. At Kansas, the team who combined strategy with track position came out on top as Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag a day after Justin Allgaier coasted to the finish line at Chicagoland Speedway.I know I’m out on this limb with little company, but I don’t have a problem with fuel ...

BRAD KESELOWSKI WINS KANSAS WITH PLENTY OF FUEL

One week after running out of gas on the final lap, it appeared Dale Earnhardt Jr. was going to be in the catbird seat Sunday at Kansas Speedway. With more fuel than the rest of the field, Earnhardt Jr. had to wait until Brad Keselowski ran out of gas. The only problem was, Keselowski never ran out of fuel and was able to score his second career victory. Stretching his fuel mileage 57 laps, Keselowski utilized a number of gas-saving tactics to conserve fuel, including pressing on the clutch a ...

IS BIFFLE’S VICTORY AT KANSAS A GAME CHANGER?

Going into Kansas last weekend, Greg Biffle needed a big finish. He came in dragging a string of disappointing finishes dating all the way back to Atlanta. One more Sunday finishing among the back markers, and Biffle’s run at a historic NASCAR triple crown (he’s also a past champion in CWTS and NNS competitions) would be over for 2010. Thanks to his victory at Kansas, “The Biff” gets more than just a morale boost.Sunday’s victory also did a nice ...

BIFFLE COMES UP BIG IN KANSAS

Coming off a disappointing finish last week in Dover, Del., Roush Fenway Racing’s Greg Biffle responded by winning his 16th career Sprint Cup Series race, second of the year and first of the 2010 Chase. Leading three times for a total of 60 laps, Biffle led Jimmie Johnson to the checkered flag by more than seven seconds, moving him up one spot in the standings to eighth, 85 points behind the defending four-time champion. “You know, everybody asked us last week if we're out the Chase, ...

NASCAR DID WHAT TO BRAD KESELOWSKI?

I always joke with friends about the “NASCAR Mafia.” Conspiracy theorists do more than joke, but I never really took them too seriously. Then a golden nugget of WTF came across the Web with very little fanfare. Until now. There are reports that NASCAR officials told Brad Keselowski to take it easy when racing Chase drivers early in the Price Chopper 400. For those who drank too much to remember the race, Keselowski was running in the top five and getting dap from the commentators ...

RAGAN, STREMME, LABONTE ALL CLOSING IN ON FLOPPER LEAD

Good news for Paul Menard. (How often does anyone get to write that?) The race in Kansas on Sunday tightened up the FLOPPER standings. FLOPPER stands for Finishes Last in Overall Points while Participating in Every Race.  1) David Ragan, Bobby Labonte and David Stremme are virtually tied, and are about 80 points ahead of Paul Menard for the title.2) This week I included a list of each driver's laps led on the season. Interesting to see the range of those numbers from 0 to 179. Definitely ...
