When I heard that Kevin Hamlin was attempting to qualify for his first Sprint Cup race in Kansas this weekend my immediate response was, "Who’s Kevin Hamlin?" Is he Denny Hamlin’s evil brother? Like all evil brothers, does he wear a black eye patch? And will we later find out that Kevin was the good brother and Denny was the evil brother? To answer those questions, I would need to establish whether or not Denny and Kevin were brothers. The answer: no. I held out hope for the eye patch anyway.

Turns out Kevin Hamlin is a non-eye-patched, 30-year-old driver from Snohomish, Wash. He has 34 career starts in the Nationwide Series, including two top 10s in 2007. He also test drives for Earnhardt-Ganassi and is John Andretti’s Sprint Cup spotter. This weekend he will attempt to qualify in the No. 37 Front Row Motorsports Long John Silver’s Dodge. His crew chief for the Price Chopper 400, as well as the race in California, will be Peter Sospenzo. The No. 37 is normally a "start and park" car driven by Tony Raines. There is a connection. Hamlin is Raines’s spotter in the Nationwide Series. He gave his golfing buddy the ride for two weeks.

Now you know who Kevin Hamlin is, and why he does not wear a black eye patch.
