WHY YOUR DRIVER WILL LOSE THE CHASE: TONY STEWART

Posted 09/25/09 at 8:30 AM PDT by Dan_Farkas | Email This |

Nearly two decades have passed since an owner/driver took home the top NASCAR series title. Tony Stewart was in a position to do so after 26 races. He won’t be after 36 races because nobody is winning the 2009 Chase, especially not Tony Stewart. Here’s why:

Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Jeff Gordon
All three drivers led the point standings after 26 races. None of them took home the title the year they led the point standings after 26 races. There is a fair argument to be made that drivers should get bonus points for leading after 26 races. It won’t happen this year, and that will cost Tony Stewart the chance to meet presidents for awkward handshakes.

Dude won his own charity race

I commend Stewart for running a charity race to benefit soldiers injured in the line of duty. Totally cool. But my dad told me never give yourself a nickname, organize a roast in your honor or win an event you’re sponsoring. Stewart not only won the charity race at the track he owns, but it’s the third time he won the event in five years. Good for Tony the philanthropist. Maybe not so good in the karma department, especially when you see what’s next.

Curse of Carrot Top
Ever since it was announced that Tony Stewart was filming a commercial with Carrot Top, he has finished outside the top 10. You got it. Zero top-10 finishes in each of his last five races. You don’t have to win every race. But you only get one or two mulligans during the Chase. Tony’s 14th-place finish last week gives him very little wiggle room.

Tony Stewart is great for the sport. He deserved a better shot at this year’s Sprint Cup. But it’s just not happening. Nobody is winning the 2009 Chase, especially not Tony Stewart.
